A Lifelong Relationship
From the 01 June issue of Monthly Mood
The Most Important Relationship In Your Life
Your relationship with yourself shapes everything else. It is the one relationship that follows you through every season of your life, through every version of who you become. It makes sense to give it the same care, attention, patience, and intention you would give to someone you deeply love.
So much of life changes. People come and go. Circumstances shift. Entire chapters end without warning. But you remain. You are the constant presence beneath all of it. The voice you wake up with every morning. The person who carries your dreams, your disappointments, your memories, your hopes. Learning how to truly be with yourself is one of the most important things you can do.
There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. Being alone can become a deeply nourishing thing. It creates space to hear your own thoughts clearly again. To notice what you actually enjoy. To discover what matters to you when no one else is influencing the answer. Some of the most meaningful growth happens in quiet moments spent with yourself. Walking alone. Cooking for yourself. Sitting with your thoughts after a long day. Dreaming about the future without needing to explain it to anyone else first.
Learn to Trust Yourself
Spending time alone teaches you who you are beneath performance, expectation, and noise.
You begin to notice your own rhythms. What drains you. What restores you. What kind of life feels good in your body. What values you want to live by. What boundaries need to be protected. What kind of people make you feel safe, energized, inspired. You learn to trust yourself more because you start listening.
And self-love is not a destination where one day you suddenly arrive fully healed, fully confident, never doubting yourself again. It is a living relationship. Just like any relationship, it keeps evolving. It needs attention. Care. Honesty. Forgiveness. Time together. There are seasons where it feels strong and easy, and seasons where it needs a little extra tenderness.
Show Up for Yourself
Part of healing your relationship with yourself is learning to show up for yourself consistently.
Keeping promises to yourself matters. Honoring your own time matters. Respecting your energy matters. Speaking kindly to yourself matters.
The way you would carefully plan a birthday dinner for someone you love, remember details about their life, encourage them when they are discouraged, or give them grace after a difficult week, you deserve that same thoughtfulness from yourself too.
It changes something quietly but profoundly when you begin treating yourself like someone worth caring for.
Build a Life You Love Living
You stop abandoning yourself to make other people comfortable. You stop waiting for permission to enjoy your life. You stop postponing things you long to experience because nobody else is available to join you. You take yourself to the café. To the bookstore. To the museum. You cook beautiful meals even if nobody else is at the table. You build a life you actually get to live inside.
The more you enjoy your own company, the less need you have for temporary validation, attention, or connections that cannot truly hold you. You stop chasing people who only offer fragments of care because you already know how it feels to be rooted in your own presence. Relationships become something you choose from fullness rather than something you cling to out of emptiness.
And perhaps that is what building a relationship with yourself really is. Returning home to yourself again and again. Learning your own language. Becoming someone you trust. Someone you can rely on. Someone who stays.
A beautiful life starts there.
