October After Dark

From the 02 October issue of Monthly Mood

With so much of October happening after sunset, it seems only right to make friends with the dark.

Take a walk through the neighborhood and admire the glowing windows. Visit a little restaurant you've been meaning to try. Go to the cinema, attend an evening concert, or spend an hour wandering through a museum that's open late.

I particularly love the idea of making an ordinary weeknight feel like a small adventure. You could meet a friend for hot chocolate, go to a bookshop before it closes, or take a walk through the city after dinner.

For a slightly more mysterious outing, visit a historic town after sunset, join a guided ghost walk, or attend a candlelit concert. October is particularly good at making these things feel like an occasion.

The important thing is to remember that the day can still hold something wonderful after the sun has gone down.

If you're looking for a little inspiration, here are a few lovely ways to spend an October evening:

  • Take a walk beneath the streetlights, then come home for hot chocolate.

  • Visit the cinema and see something you wouldn't ordinarily choose.

  • Light the candles and work on a puzzle while listening to music.

  • Go stargazing with a thermos of something warm.

  • Make homemade pizza and watch an old mystery film.

  • Attend a concert, play, or evening museum event.

  • Have a board game night with friends. A mystery game perhaps?

  • Take a long bath, put on fresh pajamas, and begin a new book.

  • Visit a cozy pub or café for an evening drink.

  • Put on your favorite album and listen to it all the way through.

  • Visit a pumpkin patch after dark, especially one with lantern-lit paths.

  • Take a guided ghost tour through the oldest part of town.

  • Book a table at a little restaurant with candlelit windows.

  • Visit a sauna, followed by a warm drink somewhere cozy.

  • Take a twilight walk along the waterfront and watch the city lights appear.

  • Go to a pub quiz with friends.

  • Attend a local storytelling evening or an author talk at a bookshop.

  • Visit a historic castle or manor house offering an evening tour.

  • Go bowling, play billiards, or find a cozy board game café.

  • Attend a wine or seasonal food tasting.

  • Take a scenic evening drive through the countryside, stopping somewhere for supper.

  • Visit a late-night art exhibition or gallery opening.

  • Book a nighttime wildlife walk with a local nature guide.

  • Find a little bakery or café that stays open late and make dessert the entire outing.

  • Take a ferry across the harbor after dark, simply to enjoy the illuminated waterfront.
