Three Things That Keep You Dysregulated

From the 01 August issue of Monthly Mood

Our nervous systems were designed to help us move through short periods of stress before returning to a place of safety. The challenge is that many of us now live in environments that rarely give our bodies that opportunity.

While there are many reasons someone may experience a dysregulated nervous system, these are three of the most common patterns that quietly keep us stuck in a state of stress.

Constant Urgency

When everything feels urgent, the nervous system begins to believe that everything is important.

Rushing from one commitment to the next. Answering every notification immediately. Eating lunch while replying to emails. Feeling guilty for sitting down. Constantly thinking about what's next instead of where you are now.

Little by little, urgency stops feeling like the exception and becomes the baseline.

One of the kindest things you can do for your nervous system is to create moments that communicate the opposite. A slow breakfast. Finishing one task before beginning another. Tiny reminders that not everything is an emergency.

Constant Stimulation

Our brains were never designed to process as much information as they do today. Notifications, podcasts, music, social media, emails, breaking news, television, advertisements, and endless scrolling can leave the nervous system with very little opportunity to simply be.

Try noticing how often you automatically reach for your phone while waiting in line, sitting on the train, or making a cup of tea. Those small pauses once gave our minds time to wander, rest, and reset.

Creating even a few moments of quiet each day can make a remarkable difference.

Constant Uncertainty

The nervous system loves predictability. That doesn't mean every day needs to be perfectly planned, but having a few reliable rhythms helps the body know what to expect.

Waking up around the same time. Eating regular meals. Taking an evening walk. Reading before bed. Small rituals become gentle anchors throughout the day. They don't remove life's uncertainty, but they create pockets of steadiness within it.

The goal isn't to eliminate stress altogether. Life will always be full of busy seasons, unexpected challenges, and moments that stretch us. The goal is simply to create enough moments of safety that your nervous system remembers how to return there again.
